Aam Aadmi Party releases list of 11 candidates for Delhi assembly polls

NEW DELHI, June 16: Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday declared its final list for 11 of the 70 assembly constituencies for the Delhi polls slated later this year.
The list includes two AAP members who have been with Kejriwal starting from the Anna Hazare movement on Lokpal bill. Activist and former media persons Manish Sisodia and Shazia Ilmi will be contesting from Patparganj and R K Puram respectively.
The candidates include ex-servicemen, journalists, advocates, engineers, sportspersons and social workers. They have been selected after a month-long process by the party's selection committee after an elaborate consultation with the members.
Those on the list include Col (retd) Devendra Sehrawat from Bijwasan, an activist working for the rights of farmers, and Saurav Bharadwaj, an engineer by profession, who studied law to help victims get justice will contest from Greater Kailash. Manoj Kumar a social worker is the AAP candidate from Kondli.
Somanth Bharti, an IIT graduate, who is actively involved in social work, will contest from Malviya Nagar. There is Gulab Singh Yadav a sportsman with a modest sweetmeats business who will fight from Matiyala.
Mukesh Kumar Dagar, an RTI activist, will contest from Najafgarh. He has actively used RTI to assist the civic development in his village. Somdutta Sharma who actively participated in the Jan Lokpal Bill struggle will contest from Sadar Bazaar.
AAP has chosen Santosh Kohli to contest from Seemapuri. She is an activist who has been fighting against black marketing in the Public Distribution System of ration supplies. Raju Dhingan a social worker and active youth in his area will contest from Trilokpuri.
"The average age of the candidates is 32, and a total of 97 applications were received by the committee," AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal said.
He said the candidates were selected by 'candidate screening committee' co-chaired by Sisodia and Sanjay Singh. The selection procedure included screening, interviewing and verifying about their criminal antecedents and popularity among locals. The party selected its candidates after verifying their historical background to ensure that candidates doesn't have any criminal case against them, they are honest and have clean image in the locality and no two persons belonging from same family, Kejriwal said.
