CJI inaugurates legal services Clinic at KU

SRINAGAR, June 17:Chief Justice of India, Justice Altamas Kabir, inaugurated the Legal Services Clinic formed by the Department of Law at KU here on Monday and also launched the Kashmir University Law Review, 2012.
In this mega felicitation function organized by Dept of Law KU, Justice Kabir who is also patron-in-chief, National Legal Services Authority was accompanied by Justice MM Kumar, Chief Justice, Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Justice Tirath Singh Thakur, Judge Supreme Court of India, Justice Virender Singh Judge High Court of J&K and Executive Chairman J&K State Legal Services Authority and advocate general of the J&K High Court M Ishaq Qadri.
In his presidential address Justice Kabir expressed his willingness to facilitate and help the students of Law department, KU to work in the Supreme Court Judges panel.
“I will feel honored to help the students of this department to get a chance to learn with the Supreme Court judges,” Justice Kabir said.
He said working as a research assistant with the Supreme Court judges will be such a “vast experience” as it will give students a chance to “learn from the best” in the country.
“Youth of Valley”, Justice Kabir said are good learners and if provided right opportunities and guidance can do wonders.
Speaking about legal education and services, Justice Kabir said there are so many avenues in law to join once a student finishes his study.
“With the advancements in the communication technology, the horizons of legal services have expanded and many new fields have come up like cyber laws, which are creating many job opportunities for the law graduates,” said Justice Kabir.
On the occasion Chief Justice, J&K High Court, Justice MM Kumar talked about the opportunities in legal profession and the difficulties a law student faces in his career.
He said LLB is a license to start working as an advocate.
The law profession, he said as such looks over crowded but still provides room for everyone to create his place.
He said this profession is full of difficulties and opportunities. Students have to face them, if they want to plunge into this profession.
“Procurement of work is a big issue which students have to take, by acquiring necessary skills students can overcome it,” said Justice Kumar.
Justice Tirath Singh Thakur, Judge Supreme Court of India, spoke about the formation of MNC legal firms and working there as a career option.
Large MNC legal firms, according to him provide job opportunities to hundreds of law graduates and generate turnover of crores.
Justice Thakur said law professionals are soldiers and pillars of strength, who fight against injustice and do not like to be governed by anarchy.
“Peace, progress and development are only possible because of the rule of law and we are proud to help people uphold this law,” said Justice Thakur.
On the occasion Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof Talat Ahmad while presenting a brief profile of the University said Law students as professionals are an important part of the society.
“Getting justice is impossible without law professionals. They are the ones who help people to get their rights,” Prof Talat said.
While informing the dignitaries about the initiatives taken by KU for placement of students Prof Talat said “Udaan and Himayat, have been taken for proper placement and skill development of students in collaboration with Central government over the last one year.”
He said several departments are being encouraged to submit proposals under Special Assistance program (SAP) of the University Grants Commission so as to position the University for the award of the University with Potential for Excellence (UPE) status.
As a part of his ambition to make KU a globally acclaimed institute, Prof Talat sought help from the present dignitaries to help in the facilitation of jobs for law students and also help bring some dynamic law personalities to the University for the benefit of the students.
Earlier Dean Faculty of Law and Head department of Law KU Prof Farooq Ahmad Mir delivered the welcome address and presented a brief profile of the department of Law.
He termed the occasion as “momentous for the students of Department of Law saying that Justice Altamas Kabir, The Chief Justice India, is the first Chief Justice of India who visited Kashmir University to address students of Law.
