early times report
Srinagar, July 31: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has declared three more drugs supplied to valley hospitals as substandard and directed hospitals across the state to stop their use forthwith.
According to official sources, the Controller of Stores of Health Department, Srinagar, in a written communication to Chief Medical Officers of valley has asked them to stop the use of Injection Piperacilline & Tozabectum 4.5 mg (PIRAZ), Injection Metonorm 2ml and Povidone-Iodine solution I P 10% in their subordinate hospitals after being found sub standard by Drug Inspector CDSCO North Zone Ghaziabad (UP) and CDSCO Jammu.
As per the communication from the Controller Stores under No Cos/H/K/714-23 dated 25/07/2013, a copy of which lies with ET Plus, the sub-standard drug Injection PIRAZ batch No TH 167 has been supplied by M/S Talent Healthcare Haridwar Uttarakhand India while Injection Mentonorm (Batch No El-110863) has been supplied by M/s Ethicare Laboratories Digiana Jammu. Similarly the Povidone-Iodine solution (Batch No 1472) has been supplied by M/s Minil Laboratories Jammu, all of which have been found to be sub-standard. Pertinently, samples of the drugs were collected from different hospitals and stores across the valley by state and central drug control teams in the backdrop of infamous spurious drug scam.
"In reference to Drug Inspector C.D.S.C.O North Zone Ghaziabad (UP) vide their letter No NZ/SMP/SKK/A-005/13-14/1338 dt. 24.07.2013, letter No NZ/SMP/SKK/A-005/13-14/1363 dt. 25.07.2013 and Drug Inspector C.D.S.C.O sub-zone Jammu letter No Sample-39/2013/704 dated 16.07.2013 that the drugs have been found sub-standard by them", reads the letter.
"You are requested to stop the usage of these drugs and return back to this store immediately if any. Also inform the subordinate institutions coming under your control i.e Distt Hospital, Sub-District Hospitals and Block Medical Officers that not to use the durgs", the letter reads further, a copy of which has been forwarded to Director Health Services Kashmir.
Meanwhile, the sources said that stock of the 'sub-standard' durgs was available in almost all hospitals in the valley while most of the hospitals working under the health department have already started returning the drugs to the controller stores here.
Jammu and Kashmir witnessed outrage over supply of fake and spurious drugs to the Government run hospitals in the recent past.
Following an outcry the State Government ordered an investigation by the Crime Branch. The Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has also ordered an independent inquiry by the Central Drug Standard Control Organization to get the quality of the drugs supplied to the state verified.
Later Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also ordered an enquiry into the issue through the newly constituted State Vigilance Commission. Passing observations on a Public Interest Litigation seeking probe and action against culpable in the infamous spurious drug scam, the J&K High Court in the month of May underlined its concern for fair and impartial probe into the issue, saying there should be no effort from anyone to shield the culprits
