| Irrigation land on either sides of Basantpur canal encroached | | | Early Times Report
Kathua, Mar 20: Irrigation Department Kathua has totally failed to emancipate the irrigation land on either sides of the Basant Pur Canal from the encroachers and its deteriorated condition at Lakhanpur, locals alleged. Anil Sharma a local resident put forth the resentment of general public against the negligence of Irrigation Department before the state government to hold the B.P Canal for deterioration and encroachment. He told that the BP canal begins from Ravi River Basant Pur and onwards flows to UJh via Lakhanpur and it was constructed by Maharaja Hari Singh with irrigational purpose for agriculture land in Kandi area but some influential locals of the Lakhanpur have made their permanent possession with concrete structures either sides of the canal and so many houses have linked their outlets of wastages to the canal. With this encroachment the canal gets reduced in size and the water flowing in it gets polluted and causing a threat to the lives of people. The dense jungle growth, broken sides of canal, silt accumulation have made the canal as drain of polluted water which cannot be used for any purpose, but the Irrigation Department is lying insensitive and irresponsible towards this grave problem. While responding to media AEE Irrigation Department Kathua Anshuman Kapil claimed the full maintenance and procurement of the canal, while the physical verification of the media all claims turned as bogus and an attempt of Irrigation to make an eye wash after finding the canal's worst deteriorated condition. |
