| Fire damages wheat crop in Samba as PDD sleeps | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 9: The Wheat crop in district Samba near the international border has got damaged, courtesy the transmission wires which are lying low due to which the crop catched fire. Yesterday wheat crop on 85 kanals of land in Ramgarh sector of Vijaypur area got damaged, causing huge loss to farmers. People of the area have been demanding since long to either tighten the LT lines or install a fire brigade in the area which could save the crop. When farmers were planning to reap the crop, it caught fire. The farmers of the villages like Barota, Pakhri, Khanpur, Pakhri, Kesa, Kamore, Nanga are facing the problem of loose fitted LT wires by the Power Development Department (PDD). These wires have been installed to provide electricity to the farmers to operate their water pumps, but due to the negligence of the department the wires have loosened with time and during windstorm in summers, when the wheat crop is ready for the harvesting these wires set the crop afire by frequent sparking. "Every year our crop catches fire due to spark in the LT wires, but despite approaching the authorities many a time, our issue hasn't been addressed," said Prem Pal Chowdhary, Sarpanch Barota Camp. "When the Wheat crop is ready for harvesting, a small spark can burn the entire crop into ashes and it becomes very difficult to control the fire," he added. They requested Deputy Commissioner Samba to install a Fire station in the area but nothing has been done so far. An official of PDD refused any negligence and said, "we didn't get any complain of this kind and we tighten all the wires time to time. There is no loop-hole from our side, my team is doing its job perfectly." Another official said, "To control the fire situation, we arrange atleast two Fire brigade vehicle in the locality, which remains their during the risk period. Installing a full fire station in the locality, where it is required only for few days cannot be justified." |
