A week ahead; NC, Congress leaders concede defeat in Parliamentary elections | PDP, BJP, coalition set to score brace each in LS polls in J&K | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, May 9: Although there is still one week left for counting of votes for the six Parliamentary seats of Jammu and Kashmir leaders of the coalition have begun giving statements that indicate that they have already conceded defeat to their opponents. Congress leader and Health Minister, Taj Mohi-ud-Din virtually dropped a bombshell when he said that National Conference leaders and workers of the Uri assembly segment voted for People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Muzaffar Hussain Beigh for the election to the Baramulla-Kupwara Lok Sabha seat on May 7. As if the statement of Taj was not enough, Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassan Mir gave a statement that has virtually broken the back of National Conference leadership. Mir said that he could not motivate all of his workers to vote for National Conference-Congress coalition candidate, Sharief-ud-Din Shariq for the Baramulla-Kupwara Lok Sabha seat. It was National Conference's Additional General Secretary, Dr. Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal who started the whole episode of cross voting during the Parliamentary elections. Dr. Kamaal accused the Congress workers of Dooru and Kokernag assembly segments of voting in favour of PDP candidate, Mehbooba Mufti instead of coalition candidate, Dr. Mehboob Beigh for the Anantnag-Pulwama Lok Sabha seat. Going by the trend of voting, Bharatiya Janta Party's Jugal Kishore has emerged the front runner for the Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat. The sitting legislator Madan Lal Sharma is reportedly figuring at serial number three with PDP's candidate, Yashpal Sharma standing next to Jugal in the final analysis for this Lok Sabha seat. In the Udhampur Lok Sabha seat, quite contrary to the expectations there is no cake walk for the National Conference-Congress coalition candidate and Union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad as he is locked in a close contest with Dr. Jitendra Singh of BJP. Heavy voting in the Chenab Valley might come to the rescue of Azad and he may emerge victorious, but with a slender margin. In the Anantnag-Pulwama Lok Sabha seat, despite boycott of elections in PDP dominated areas, the party candidate, Mehbooba Mufti is set to wrest the seat from sitting MP, Dr. Mehboob Beigh of National Conference. Mehbooba is all set to get the benefit of good polling in the assembly segments like Pahalgam, Shangus, Bijbehara and Devsar. She is also likely to get benefit of cross voting in assembly segments like Dooru and Kokernag. In the Srinagar-Budgam Lok Sabha seat, Dr. Farooq Abdullah of National Conference is likely to retain his seat. Dr. Abdullah might get benefitted due to the heavy polling in assembly segments like Kangan and Charar-I-Sharief in Ganderbal and Budgam districts respectively. However, like Azad, Dr. Abdullah too is expected to win by a thin margin and not by landslide margin. Cross voting by Congress, National Conference and Ghulam Hassan Mir led Democratic Nationalist Party (DPN) leaders and workers in assembly segments like Uri, Tangmarg, Kupwara, Handwara and Karnah is all set to make PDP's Muzaffar Hussain Beigh as the next Member of Parliament from Baramulla-Kupwara Lok Sabha seat replacing Sharief-ud-din Shariq of National Conference. In the Ladakh Parliamentary seat, Thupstan Chewang of Bharatiya Janta Party might get benefitted following division of votes among the coalition partners National Conference and Congress. Votes of coalition candidate, Tsering Samphel have been divided since two rebels have joined the electoral fray. One of the rebels is a shadow candidate of National Conference with the other one enjoying the support of a section of Muslim community in Kargil district.
