| Mughal road thrown open after six months | | Minister assures further development | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 31 : After remaining closed for six months due to heavy snowfall, the historical Mughal Road was today thrown open for Public by Minister for Roads and Buildings (R&B) with assurances of further development on the road in near future. The Rs 639 crore project under construction Mughal road which connects Kashmir division through south Kashmir's Shopian side with Raouri and Poonch areas was once again thrown open for public by Minister for R&B, Abdul Majeed Wani at Shopian nearly after seven months gap. The road was closed in November last year after heavy snowfall started in the area at many places along the road from Shopian side which include in Heerpora, Dobijan, Peer Ki Gali and Zaznar areas. Minister for R&B while talking to media persons on the occasion said that since road remains closed for nearly 6 months every year due to heavy snowfall at many places, so government has already sanctioned a tunnel project for the road which has been sent to central government for immediate release of funds some two years back. "Tunnel project has already been surveyed by a team of experts and the project has been sent for approval, all including Chief Minister himself is taking keen interest to make the Mughal road all weather and the day is not far when this dream will come true," said Wani while talking to media persons. He said that in order to make the road all weather it needs a mega tunnel from Chatapani to Zanar areas which according to him is an area which remains closed half of the year, besides danger of landslides always remains on cards in these areas throughout the year Concerned Mughal road officials present on the occasion said that snow from Peer Ki Gali ,Chhata Pani,Zaznar and upper parts of Peer Ki Gali has been cleared from the road and road is safe to be use by public, however due to slippery condition and continuous process of landslides at many places along the road it has yet been opened to light motor vehicles only and added that as per orders no vehicular movement will be allowed after 4 pm and before 8 am on the road till it is not considered completely safe for journey. Pertinently the road was scheduled to be completed in 2011 and throw open for public is still under construction and people of both sides are demanding work on tunnel project immediately. |
