| 4 charred to death, 10 injured in hotel 'Neelam inferno' | | | Early Times Repot
Jammu, May 31: Four people including a constable of Jammu and Kashmir police were charred to death in a mysterious fire that broke out in a Neelam Hotel at Bus Stand area. "Four people were burnt alive including of which three have been identified as police constable and father, son duo while 10 others received burn injuries in an inferno early morning in Hotel Neelam at General bus stand area," police spokesman here said. He said the fire broke out during wee hours at around 0230 hrs. "There were total 10 rooms in the hotel out of which seven were occupied," he said adding that goods including furniture and other items worth lakhs got damaged in the devastating fire. "Eight fire tenders were immediately pressed into service to control the fire," he said and added that it took around 4 to5 hours to douse the flames. 'Timely action prevented the fire from spreading to the nearby shops and hotels, police said. The Hotel 'Neelam' where fire broke out is situated near General Bus Stand Jammu and usually witnesses heavy rush of guest throughout the year. The hotel belongs to senior National Conference Leader, Chandan Mohan. The deceased have been identified as Rakesh Kumar, the constable a driver presently posted at Rajouri, Dolu Ram and his son Rakesh Kumar, both residents of Michadi village, district Kathua while identity one of the deceased could not be ascertained yet. "Short circuit could be the reason but we are investigating the matter," police said. "The injured have been shifted to hospital, he added. "Deputy Commissioner Jammu has been ordered to enquire into the circumstances that caused the fire and to ascertain responsibility, if any, for the same," sources said. Deputy Commissioner, Ajeet Sahu admitted that on the directions of Chief Minster, probe has been ordered in the incident and a FIR was registered in police station, Bus stand. He informed that Rupees 1.5 lakh compensation was given to the family of three identified deceased person and 1 yet to be identified. "We will provide compensation even to the injured but the minor injured have left hospital after getting first aid". Police sources said they are also looking for the negligence on the part of hotel management as there was a huge dump of the tyres in the store in the Hotel as rubber is seen as root cause of inferno. They added FIR was registered and investigation is on in this regard.
