Early Times Report
Jammu, June 17 : The state unit of the Congress is frantically awaiting a nod from the party high command to the former's decision to go it alone in the ensuing Assembly polls, due towards the end of the current year.
"The leadership of the state unit of the Congress has already decided against framing any pre-poll alliance with the National Conference (NC) during the ensuing Assembly elections," party sources said.
They said, "The state leadership already has conveyed its decision to the high command at national capital and thus is waiting for its final decision."
"What is amazing is that both the factions in the state unit of the Congress, one headed by Saif-ud-Din Soz, and the other by Ghulam Nabi Azad, have favoured going alone in the coming Assembly election, they said. Party sources said that both the factions in the state unit of the Congress have blamed the NC for the rout the Congress suffered in the three Lok Sabha seats in the regions of Jammu and Ladakh. Some senior Congress leaders even didn't hesitate to accept that defeat of the Congress nominees/candidates is the result of peoples' anger against the National Conference which headed the state collation regime. Before playing another match, these state Congress leaders do not want to repeat the mistake by forging a pre-poll alliance with the NC in the coming Assembly election on the plea that alliance with NC could prove a liability for the Congress during the ensuing Assembly election.
Some of leaders in state unit of party have reportedly conveyed to the party high command that in case the Congress fails to win a simple majority in the 87-member Assembly it has the option for forming the Government in alliance with either the NC or with the PDP. "And thus party should play with its cards keeping close to its chest instead of announcing any pre polls alliance, they added. Meanwhile if these sources are believed the NC leadership too is equally pondering upon same polls plank i.e. going alone during the coming Assembly election on the plea that a pre-poll alliance with the Congress had forced the 76-year old party to receive drubbing from the voters in the three Lok Sabha constituencies in the Kashmir valley. Sources also said that the Congress high command may seek final opinion from Ghulam Nabi Azad who has been installed as leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha and is known for having played long innings for the party in political scenario. Meantime anything that has worried the NC leadership is that without forging a pre-poll alliance between the Congress and the NC the congress could share power with the PDP which can force the NC to lose power.
