| Azad to play key role in selection of Congress candidates for polls in J&K | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 5: Leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha and former Union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, has been reportedly given a free hand in selecting party candidates for the ensuing Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir. Sources said that the high command has decided, in principle, to accommodate candidates from both camps, one led by Soz and the other by Azad in order to reduce chances of a conflict within the party. Again both Soz and Azad are in favour of repeating those 17 candidates who had been elected to the Assembly in 2008. However, the party high command has suggested to Azad and Soz to prepare a dossier on all the 17 sitting MLAs including the ministers so that those whose performance was found to be above average were given the party mandate for the ensuing election. A section of senior party leaders have conveyed to Azad their displeasure against the move to field all the sit ting MLAs from the Congress on the plea that the performance of some of them had been quite poor and their chances for securing a win were dim. In this connection Azad is being asked to submit his list of probable candidates who could be given the Congress ticket. His list will be later matched with the list submitted by the PCC. No doubt the Congress leaders claims that the party may emerge as the single largest party but this claim is simply meant for peoples' consumption. |
