Sons take up diverse routs in PDP and Cong | Mangat's familial political colours | | Kunal Shrivatsa JAMMU, Sept 2: Congress stalwart and former Deputy Chief Minister Pandit Mangat Ram Sharma's announcement to support his son as People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate from Kathua Assembly constituency has sprung a surprise in political circles, particularly in Congress. With octogenarian Mangat Ram's open declaration to support his elder son Subhash Sharma as PDP nominee, many in Congress believe that everything is not well in Sharma clan since his youngest son Rajneesh Sharma alias Mian is trying to get a Congress ticket from Bani Assembly constituency in Kathua district. Party insiders say that Mangat Ram siding with one son may be a result of fight between the two brothers over the political legacy of their father, who once was an 'iconic ' figure in the State unit of Congress but now living a life in political bewilderness since his loss in 2008 Assembly elections. "Something is cooking up in the family… It looks like that there are some differences as on one hand Mangat Ram's youngest son Rajneesh is claiming a Congress candidature from Bani segment whereas his elder son Subhash is jumping over to PDP to contest election from Kathua," wishing anonymity, a Congress leader said. "The veteran leader's decision is indeed baffling for several… It is quite contradictory to what his son Rajneesh is aiming for… Rajneesh's name has recently been forwarded to the Congress Screening Committee in the list of panel along with other contender for the Bani seat, Prem Sagar Aziz," he added. It is no secret that two of Mangat Ram Sharma's sons Subhash and Rajneesh are nurturing political ambitions and both of them are trying to gain a foothold in political setup of Kathua like their father, who remained in centre stage of district as well as state politics for more than five decades. Subhash has already tried his hand to be in the political reckoning when he fought as a Congress candidate from Kathua constituency in 1996 Assembly polls but lost the contest. During that election, though Subhash was an official Congress candidate but he finished a poor third while the rebel Congress contestant, Master Lal Chand Sharma, who was denied ticket, lost narrowly to Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Sagar Chand. On the other hand, Congress' 'old war horse' Mangat Ram's other son Rajneesh for quite some time now has activated himself in Bani Assembly constituency, which once was represented by his father. |
