Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 15: An influential person has allegedly resumed construction of a shopping complex illegally in village Srigufwara on river Lidder, despite a High Court directive banning constructions within 250 meters of river banks.
The revenue officials posted at a stone's throw from the site are indifferent to the illegal construction coming up along the riverside; however they blame top officials for the violation.
"I am aware of this particular violation. I ordered its demolition twice but former Divisional Commissioner Kashmir called and directed us not to harm the violator as he will provide land in exchange. The violator then applied for the same, However, the deputy commissioner Anantnag did not allowed him and the file lies on his table.." A senior revenue official on the conditions of anonymity told Early Times.
He accepted that the revenue department was under pressured by the violator through the top officials of the department. "Yes you yourself know his brother is linked with top politicians and he used them during the construction of shopping complex but if will convey the same to DC Anantnag he will surely initiate action against him." He added.
Locals informed Early Times that the violator has resumed unlawful activity and is constructing the second story of the shopping complex.
Ironically, seven more constructions are coming up on other side of shopping complex.
On 15 of October last year, Tehsildar Srigufwara has assured demolition of the illegally constructed shopping complex, however months after no action was taken. Locals fear constructions alongside river Lidder will choke the flow of water.
The tributary irrigates land of Srigufwara, Hitigam, Chinigund, Kanelwan, and dozens of other adjoining villages. Jammu and Kashmir High Court has in the month of July this year issued a directive banning the constructions within 250 meters of rivers and has directed revenue, police and Flood Control department to implement the directions strictly.
