Guv's bang-on-time entry sends organizers in tizzy, acting VC perplexed
JU's north zone youth fest begins on clumsy note

Baffled cultural officer Kak goofs up address
ET Report
JAMMU, Jan 15: 30th North Zone Youth Festival which is being hosted by University of Jammu began on a clumsy note with mismanagement noticeable all over.
The mega event which is being seen as acting vice-chancellor Prof. R.D. Sharma's desperate attempt to ensure selection as permanent vice-chancellor of University of Jammu today began with delegates and participants both talking about mismanagement.
Though Governor N.N. Vohra lavished praise on the acting Vice-Chancellor for having managed to invite 1000 odd participants from various parts of the country but when he arrived bang on time, there was complete chaos outside General Zorawar Singh Auditorium, where the inaugural session was to be held.
The youth contingents who had arrived from 25 different universities of Northern India were entering the hall when the Governor's cavalcade arrived. Cavalcade would have hit a delegate, had she not jumped to the left side of the road leading towards the auditorium. Amid the chaos, none knew who received the Governor at the gate and whether or not protocol was followed. Not habitual of receiving guests on time, the university authorities were seemingly caught unaware.
Governor entered the auditorium on time and saw half of the seats in the hall vacant. The delegates and participants had been entering the hall despite the fact that they were supposed to be seated by 12 noon. Governor's early arrival put the organisers in a tizzy who were seen rushing here and there to ensure that nothing goes wrong. The host at the inaugural, Ifra Kak's opening addresses was more of a baffled speech rather than a connected communication. She spoke on the occasion as the novice hosting an event for the first time. Kak is cultural officer of Jammu University.
The delay in participants and guests failing to get seated by 12 noon had more to do with police personnel frisking and asking unnecessary questions even to those who were having cards hanging around their necks. Once the delegates were seated, the inaugural which was supposed to be short and meaningful exercise was unnecessarily stretched for more than an hour. This was followed by another goof-up.
As soon as Governor N.N.Vohra finished his speech, he was escorted by his own staff from the stage and it is they, who ensured that Vohra gets properly seated. The staff of university which has been assigned the job of taking care of the Chancellor was caught unaware and one could make out easily, how embarrassed the acting VC Prof. R.D.Sharma was due to the seemingly non-cooperative attitude of the university administration. A straightforward man, Prof. R.D.Sharma has of late seen his close aides leaving no stone unturned to damage his reputation.
The goof-up was compounded when the curtain of the stage of General Zorawar Singh Auditorium had to be closed physically and then, it took four announcements from the stage to again get the curtain moved. The man on job had seemingly fallen sleep and had to be virtually pushed to do the job of moving the curtain. Cultural item which was part of the inaugural was badly choreographed with the artists failing to do justice with the roles assigned to them.
Apart from this goof-up, Governor N.N. Vohra inaugurated "UDGOSH", 5 days Inter University North Zone Youth Festival. About 1000 students from 25 universities of 7 North Indian States are participating in this Youth festival. The participants would compete in 25 events in the field of music, fine arts, dance, drama and literary activities.
Governor complimented the Jammu University for organising this significant event. Emphasizing the importance of such Festivals which are immensely helpful in strengthening the bonds of unity and communal harmony, the Governor said that they provide an opportunity to the youth hailing from different cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds to meet, interact, understand and appreciate the wonderful diversities which exist in our country.
