SRINAGAR, Jan 15: Leaving already traumatized flood victims in a state of shock, a female Congress worker with the help of some Department of Social Welfare employees decamped with cash collected from residents for the rehabilitation of flood affected people at Batmaloo area of the city.
Early Times has learnt from sources that a Congress worker Saira with the help of two Social Welfare employees Gulshan and Nusrat duped dozens of residents under the grab of rehabilitation of flood affected families of the area.
"The trio cleverly convinced people to contribute for the rehabilitation of flood affected families of Batmaloo and collected Rs. 50,000 at the rate of Rs. 250 from each household. Ironically they decamped with cash and also threatened residents not to raise the issue," sources said.
Sources said that the main brain of the gang Saira who is a Congress worker planned and then cleverly executed the frightening drama. "They claimed that relief package is free of cost but they have to pay travelling charges so that the same could reach to the affected families well on time. Every household in Batmaloo and SDA Colony wholeheartedly contributed keeping in view the desperate economic conditions of those families who lost their dwellings in devastating floods in September last year," sources said. Sources said that as the relief items consisting of thermo col and a blanket were being distributed among the affected the aggrieved got annoyed as to how residents were duped under a well planned manner.
"The residents who had contributed rupees 250 were rebuked by the volunteers as to why they paid when the package is free of cost" sources said. They further said that some responsible people along with Colony Head approached the family members of the gang who in return threatened them of dire consequences in case they raise the issue. "We were crestfallen the moment we came to know that the trio who pretended to be the well wishers of flood affected duped innocent residents and decamped with the money," sources said. Meanwhile, the residents appealed district administration and DGP K Rajendra to bring the accused to book. They later staged peaceful protests demanding immediate arrest of the trio.
