BJP to field Manhas, PDP likely to win 3 seats | RS elections | | Asif Iqbal Naik
Early Times Report
Kishtwar, Jan 15 : After winning 25 seats in recently held state assembly elections, Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) for the first time is all set to get an opportunity to win one out of four seats in from Jammu and Kashmir, the election for which is schedule to be held on February 7, 2014. As per the sources, BJP with 25 seats along with support of few independent candidates has decided to field senior party leader and former state President Shamsher Singh Manhas for lone Rajya Sabha seat assured for the party from state of Jammu and Kashmir out of the four seats. The sources said that party high command has finalized the name of Shamsher Singh and the final announcement in this regard will be soon after the notification will be issued on 21st January 2015. As per the Election authorities, the Election Commission of India will issue three different notifications for the four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir which includes one against the seat represented by leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, second against the seat represented by JKPCC State President Saif ud Din Soz and third against the two seats represented by Ghulam Nabi Rattan Puri and Mohammad Shafi Uri, both from National Conference. As per the norms, after issuing of three different notification; each MLA in 87 member house of Jammu and Kashmir Lagislative Assembly is entitled for three votes and going by strength of the various political parties in the state, PDP with 28 seats and support of independent candidates is all set to win one assured seat and the chances of PDP winning the two remaining seats are high and only in case National Conference with 15 seats and Congress with 12 seats along with independents comes together, there are chances that PDP may lose the two seats and all the four major parties will settle for one each seat in Rajya Sabha at the end; but the sources however said that NC and Congress will not go for any alliance in Rajya Sabha election and will even not file their candidates. If sources are to be believed, PDP will win three seats out of four and majority of the seats will be declared as unopposed. Moreover if BJP & PDP alliance get a final shape before the date of filling of nomination papers, both parties will settle for two seats each like NC-Congress coalition settle for two seats each in 2009 Rajya Sabha elections. The tenure of Rajya Sabha MP in Jammu and Kashmir is six year while in rest of the country it is only five years. It is pertinent to mention that after infamous 2011 cross voting scandal, seven BJP MLAs cross voted in favour of NC/Congress candidate, the state government adopted open ballot system for these elections which will minimize the cross voting, while in 2009 Rajya Sabha election State BJP President and MP Jughal Kishore Sharma cross voted in favour of National Conference patron Dr. Farooq Abdullah.
