Start sustained operations against militants in J&K | | | Washington has again suggested to Islamabad to tame terrorists as they could target not only India and Afghanistan but America too. This suggestion has been conveyed by John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, during his brief visit to Islamabad. He has said Pakistan must fight militant groups that threaten Afghan, Indian and US interests He said all militant groups should be targeted to bring security to the region. "Terror groups such as the Taliban, the Haqqani Network, Lashkar-e-Toiba and other groups continue to pose a threat to Pakistan, to its neighbours, and to the United States," Kerry told a joint news conference in Islamabad with Pakistan PM's adviser on national security and foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz. "And all of us have a responsibility to ensure that these groups do not gain a foothold but rather are pushed back into the recesses of (Pakistan´s) memory. ... Make no mistake. The task is a difficult one and it is not done," said Kerry. Interestingly Kerry has not responded to Islamabad's plea that Washington should intervene and persuade New Delhi to resume talks with Pakistan.Sartaj Aziz, adviser to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, had told Kerry that the United States, being an influential member of the international community, could prevail upon India to work with Pakistan towards regional peace and economic prosperity. Well Kerry may have not been impressed by Aziz's argument because the US knows it better than any other country that New Delhi has been quite keen to promote cordial ties with Islamabad in the interest of peace in the region.Washington knows it better than any other country that continued export of terror to India and Islamabad's nexus with Kashmiri separatists have proved a red rag to the Indian bull.Already Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conveyed to Pakistan that terror and talks cannot go together still agencies in Pakistan, state and non-state actors in Pakistan continue to assist militants in sneaking into Jammu and Kashmir for raising the level of violence. Apart frtom repeated ceasefire violations being committed by Pakistan troops and Rangers on the LOC and on the IB in Jammu and Kashmir piling of arms, ammunition and explosives by militants are a matter of worry for the Government. These ceasefire violations, though their severity have been diluted by the heavy retaliatory fire from the Indian Army and BSF, are a matter of concern, inconvenience for several thousand border villagers. The Army and the police recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition from a hideout in Poonch on Wednesday which indicates that militants were trying to pile up weapons and explosives which they could later use it during attacks against the security forces and against political leaders in order to raise the level of tension, conflict and political instability. The hideout was smashed but militants should have fled from the scene and may be in search of carving out new hideouts. On Wednesday just one militant engaged security forces in Sopore in north Kashmir in a prolonged gun fight. This too indicates that despite the fact that man power stands depleted for the militants still they continue to operate getting ready for engaging security forces in direct encounters. It is in this context the police and the security forces besides the Army need to reframe their anti-insurgency plan so that sustained and multi-dimensional and multi-directional operations were launched within the state and on the border with Pakistan for eliminating militants and for preventing infiltration from across the IB and the LOC. |
