Kashmiris ridicule Omar's demand for TRC

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Jan 21: The people of Kashmir have ridiculed former Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah's demand for Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
Human rights defenders told early times that after being rejected by the people in the just concluded assembly elections, Omar Abdullah has started shedding crocodile tears over the plight of hapless Kashmiris.
Pertinent to mention, Omar promised a TRC after the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) issued its historic decision on the unmarked graves in 2011. The commission was told in clear terms not to investigate the unmarked graves case any further. The government also made clear that further investigation into the unmarked graves shall be done by the TRC. But instead of forming the TRC, the government rendered the SHRC defunct by delaying appointment of its chairman and members to this day. Now it has no member as well. A four-member empowered committee headed by the former Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah was scheduled to meet in the August last year to appoint the chairman.
Besides, Omar Abdullah, the empowered committee comprised Mubarak Gull, Chairman Legislative Council, Amrit Malhotra and leader of opposition in assembly which fell vacant after Mahbooba Mufti was elected to Lok Sabha from Anantnag-Pulwama Parliamentary constituency. However, the meeting was postponed indefinitely with the GAD citing busy schedule of Chief Minister as one of the reasons. A senior functionary of the GAD had assured that the appointment of chairman and members would be made before the beginning of autumn session starting August 25. Omar Abdullah dealt a severe blow to the commission by restraining it from investigating the unmarked grave case. Omar had said the investigation shall be entrusted to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). However, he failed to appoint the TRC during his tenure. Omar Abdullalh's demand for a TRC at this point of time makes no sense.
