Losses to farmers, land owners in Kashmir floods unaccounted | 3800 hectares of land drowned, Crop worth Rs 3675 cr damaged | | Javaid Naikoo

Srinagar, Feb 3: As the disastrous flood of Jammu and Kashmir last year damaged public and Private infrastructure worth crores of rupees, it also damaged ready to reap crops and washed away fertile land of farmers worth crores, however unlike priority to other works, losses to farmers and land owners are still unaccounted for central relief package. As per figures collected from the concerned Department of Agriculture, In about ten Districts of Kashmir division besides Leh District of Ladakh, around 3800 hectares of land was completely washed away by floods of September 2014 and standing crop on around 1.35 Lakh Hectares was damaged in floods. Details also reveal that loss in terms of production assessed by field staff of the department of agriculture was at 8,54,213 MT in respect of Cereals, 5,08,492 MT in respect of Vegetables,14,02,472 MT of Fodder , 1773 MT of Pulses and 11 MT of Saffron and the overall loss was assessed as Rs 3675 Crore. In addition to the damage to ready to reap crops, floods also washed away and filled around 3811 hectares of land with silt and turned the fertile crop bearing land in to uncultivated, useless land. According to the Director Horticulture Kashmir, Peerzada Mushtaq, to reclaim the damaged land, extensive soil conservative measures were put in place and for that purpose a plan to the tune of Rs 453.51 Cr has already been submitted with the higher ups; besides, keeping in view the loss to farmers in their ready to reap crops, the department has also submitted an assistance plan of Rs 64.17 Cr to assist the farmers by providing them free of cost seeds. "We are yet to receive package for Farmers whose agricultural land was either washed away or whose ready to reap crops were damaged by floods; I am hopeful in coming days we may received package from the central government to help all those farmers and land owners."Said Peerzada Mushtaq. Meanwhile according to official sources a team of world bank is assessing losses due to floods in Jammu and kashmir and paving ways to provide relief to the flood affected people of the state including farmers and land owners. Sources said that state government team accompanying world Bank team is headed by principal secretary Planning and Development, BR Sharma and the World Bank representative Saurabh Dani who assured support and assistance to the state government; however sources added that team members may recheck the assessment reports submitted by state government. Sources said that world bank team may carry out an analysis of the loss assessment within few days. |
