Sacked home secretary could have helped Azad's cause! | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 6: Sacking of Anil Goswami as union home secretary just before the Rajya Sabha polls in Jammu and Kashmir has added to the woes of the Congress stalwart Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is contesting the RS polls as a joint candidate of National Conference and Congress to seek re-election to the upper house from J&K. The former union home secretary Anil Goswami was the principal secretary to the Azad and he (Azad) was instrumental in making Goswami the home secretary, the first IAS officer from the State to hold this post. The home secretary is influential and privy to many files and developments and even his verbal directions can make or mar the career of politicians and police officials. Goswami being in the office could have influenced at least key independents from Kashmir, where different agencies are in close contact with politicians. Being a home secretary Goswami could have used his clout to secure win for Azad. Azad was key figure in the Congress and has enough experience of how things move in the power corridors and could have easily used home secretary's influence to his advantage. "If person like Matang Singh could have such a clout that he can get directions issued from Goswami one can well imagine how much clout Azad might be having in this ministry," said a senior government official. "The sacking of Goswami just two-days before the crucial elections has tilted balance against Azad. The two key independents whose strings could have been pulled by the home ministry could have switched the sides to save their own skin and career rather than go all out against Azad," said a source. "Politicians are more concerned about themselves than anything else. Now with Goswami gone, he (Azad) is likely to taste defeat," he added. |
