Omar, a man of double standards | He welcomed Liaqat's release by NIA but did not utter a word on court bail to his party colleague Tallo | | ET Report JAMMU, Feb 6: It seems as if ex-J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah does not base his thought process on logic and instead prefers to make his arguments based on his personal likes and dislikes. Take for example his welcome statement on the NIA exonerating Liaqat Shah of terror charges and his "silence" over his own party colleague and ex-MLC TS Wazir alias Tallo getting a bail from the court. It speaks of his double standards and also shows that how politically important Kashmir is for him and how negligible is Jammu for him and NC. Early Times strongly feels that Omar should treat both Jammu and Kashmir regions equally and not constantly apply double standards in dealing with the issues of the people of these two areas. Liaqat of Kupwara, Kashmir, had exfiltrated to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in 1997. While he was married to two Kashmiri women, he had also married a Pak woman at Mansehra. He was crossing the Indo-Nepal border at the Sanauli post along with his wife Akhtar-un-Nissa and a step-daughter when the Special Cell arrested him on March 20, 2013. The NIA absolved him of the terror charges and released him some time back. Soon after his release, Omar, who had earlier taken up the issue of his arrest with union home ministry, was quick to make a comment. He welcomed the NIA move and said "at least I am happy that truth has finally come out and I hope that security agencies do not target Kashmiris to achieve their ulterior motives." But over the Tallo's court bail a few days back, he preferred to keep mum. This despite the fact that Tallo was made MLC by his own party. The NC leader was arrested by a police SIT team in connection with his alleged role in the Chopra family murders at their residence in the posh Trikuta Nagar locality. Omar's silence on the Tallo's court bail raises certain issues. A majority people in Jammu feel that it was a "select" NC group which had allegedly played an important role in the Tallo's arrest in the Chopra family murders. Alleged reason: A business rivalry. Is it because of this reason that the ex-CM preferred not to utter a single word on the Tallo episode? If it so, it is not going to help him politically in any way. Neither Omar nor anyone else can hold a person guilty of a crime. A person is innocent till a court of law holds him guilty of a crime. So, till Tallo is held guilty of his crime by the court, no one has the authority to give him any kind of punishment. If Omar can welcome the release of a "militant", who had gone to PoK to receive arms' training and then wage a war against India, people here fail to understand what stopped him from speaking on the Tallo's bail by the court. A few words from him would have definitely sent a signal to the people of Jammu region that he was not anti-Jammu. He should also not hesitate from "exposing" the "black sheep" in his party who had done a great harm to NC by promoting their business interests. |
