Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, May 16: In a major embarrassment to the various security agencies operating in the state many Pakistani flags were hoisted by a group of people in different localities of the summer capital. These agencies were caught unawares after these flags were spotted in the different areas of the city.
Reports reaching here said that people were surprised in some of the localities in the Srinagar city after they saw the Pakistani flags fluttering atop electric and telephone poles. These flags caught the attention of the people with some of the passersby getting stuck out of the surprise in these areas at least for some time.
The Pakistani flags were seen fluttering in the Parimpora, Hyderpora and Hariparbat areas of the Srinagar city. It took some time for the Jammu & Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel to react to the situation. They immediately pulled down the flags so as to avoid further embarrassment.
Early Times has learnt from sources that these flags were placed or hoisted during the night when no police of CRPF personal was present there to monitor the situation. It was due to this reason that these flags could be seen fluttering as soon as the dawn set in. The appearance of flags received attention and they remained there for hours together before being pulled down.
At the same time police personnel were deployed in great strength to foil the hoisting of tri-colour by a group of people owing allegiance to 'Youth For Nation' organization near clock tower (Ghanta Ghar) in the Lal Chowk area here. The cops kept a close eye on the overall activities so that the flag hoisting programme could be foiled.
Since early morning scores of police personnel donning the riot gear were posted in the Ghanta Ghar and the adjoining areas so that nobody was allowed to hoist the tri-colour. Extra security arrangements were also put in place at the some other places with police and CRPF personnel remaining vigilant.
In the city centre body check and frisking of the civilians was carried out throughout the day. Vehicles entering the city from Central, South and North Kashmir were thoroughly checked by the police and CRPF personnel. Some of the passengers alleged harassment from the police and CRPF personnel on the pretext of questioning in view of the proposed flag hoisting programme.
It would be in place to mention here that 'Youth For Nation' had asked people to assemble in the Lal Chowk area near the clock tower as part of its programme to hoist the tri-colour. However, the police swung into action days before and arrested some of the activists of the organization in the winter capital. Raids were also carried out on some suspected places in the Kashmir valley so that the programme was foiled.
