Early Times Report

Srinagar, Jan 27: The indifference of the authorities to illegal constructions in 'Golden Meadow' Sonamarg has posed serious threat to its fragile ecology with babus and politicians' continuing to use it as their personal property. Despite stringent laws in place, authorities have miserably failed to take action against the transgressors who have been erecting illegal structures in Sonamarg tourist destination in sheer violation of the Master Plan Act.
Sources said that a local politician who unsuccessfully contested 2014 Assembly elections on PDP ticket had in September last year raised a concrete structure in main Sonamarg. The police is yet lodge an FIR against him even as the structure was razed to rubble.
"Sonamarg has been used as personal property by senior officials and politicians whose wrongdoings have been overlooked over the years. If the structure of a politician who is a well known goon was demolished why police did not lodge an FIR against him," sources told 'Early Times'
Sources said that the politician has been using his political power as a tool to hide his unlawful activities which has taken huge toll on commoners and the environment as well. "District Ganderbal has become the hub of gangsters while as the officials concerned have given them a free hand to resort to loot and plunder for their patty personal gains," sources said. Sources said from peon to Tehsildar and Santri to Mantri everyone is 'hand in glove' with encroachers busy in ruining scenic beauty of Sonamarg. They said that the authorities including that of police have been acting as mute spectators over the wrongdoings of well-off and influential people. "The day after the news about illegal construction by a top Babu of Kashmir was published in 'Early Times', he amid tight security visited the place in the evening. So far the structure is intact and the authorities seem uninterrupted over the issue," sources said. Sources said that many illegal structures have come up in Sonamarg over the years with encroachers with due support of the authorities are taking undue advantages of snow to raise illegal structures. "They use to raise illegal structures in winter season as the illegal work which otherwise is well known to authorities goes unseen during snowfall,'' source said.
