Embarrassment! Pakistani flag hoisted in city centre during broad day light | Police, CRPF personnel act as mute spectators | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 18: In a major embarrassment for police and other security agencies a group of people today hoisted Pakistani flag in the city centre and that too in the broad day light. Interestingly, despite presence of police and security forces personnel no arrests were made on this occasion. Reports and eye-witnesses said that around 60-70 persons riding motorcycles and driving cars appeared in the Lal Chowk area in the afternoon. Some persons among this group went atop the clock tower better known as Ghanta Ghar and hoisted Pakistani flag. The incident took place in middle of the day while the area was abuzz with activities. "While the Lal Chowk was busy with activities a huge group of people especially youth appeared near the Ghanta Ghar area. The appearance of the group was not given any attention by the people first, but when some of the group members hoisted Pakistani flag everyone got attentive," said an eye-witness while talking to Early Times. Reports said that some of the police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel who were posted in the area did not act against the people who hoisted the Pakistani flag. The inaction from the police and security forces personnel meant that the youth managed their escape from the place while riding the motorcycles. Nobody was arrested from the area while the incident took place. It has been learnt from sources that the group that hoisted the Pakistani flag was part of a religious procession that started its journey from downtown Srinagar and reached Lal Chowk. The people got surprised over the hoisting of Pakistani flag since the same has happened after a long period. The incident took place at a time when Kashmir is limping back to normalcy after more than five months of unrest. It would be in place to mention here that waving of Pakistani flag along with the waving of flag of Islamic State of Iraq & Syria (ISIS) has become a norm in downtown Srinagar on Fridays. Groups of agitated would appear in many areas of downtown Srinagar and display flags of Pakistan and ISIS on regular basis. The hoisting of Pakistani flag on the clock tower in the Lal Chowk areas is no less than important development. During the summer agitation of 2010 some of the people went atop the clock tower and hoisted the Pakistani flag. The people who had hoisted the Pakistani flag were part of the procession led by chairman of his faction of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. The incident took place on Eid day. In 1992 when militancy was its peak in Kashmir, present Prime Minister and senior Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leader Narendra Modi hoisted tri-colour at Ghanta Ghar along with some other BJP leaders including Murli Manohar Joshi. Joshi was the BJP President at that time and the hoisting of national flag took place on republic day. This marked the culmination of 'Ekta Yatra' launched by BJP at that time. |
