JU purchases Medical books worth lakhs for selective students | Unaccountability | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 21: Brazenly demining the higher education to its low, Jammu University reportedly purchased medical books worth lakhs for the selective students, probably wards of influential officers. In reply to RTI, it was informed that in the year 2010 ,78 medical books were purchased while the number in 2011 was 50, in 2012 it was 65, in 2013 over 49 books were purchased, in 2014 over 91 books and in the year 2015 ,63 books were purchased by the University of Jammu paying worth 12,67,515 lakhs for 396 medical books. However, official sources told early Times that there was no concrete justification for conduct of huge purchase of medical books. "These books are being purchased to favour wards of influential officers, especially of senior officers and faculty members who are studying medical in various colleges," said sources. The sources added that despite earning huge money, these officers put extra liability on the university Exchequer, by forcing library officials to purchase particular set of books as per the demand of the officers. Recalling the episode of scam came to light sometime back in Central Library, reliable sources disclosed that medical books worth more than forty thousand were purchased by central library under the nose of university administration in order to provide undue benefit to the child of Jai Kumar Sharma, who was the then Special Secretary to present Vice Chancellor, Prof R.D.Sharma. This episode came to highlight in press media a number of times, but the university authority at the instance of Vice Chancellor till now tried to shield the erring officer and rather awarded him with prize posting as Director CDC without any merit and experience, they added. Sources further said that the episode of Jai Kumar Sharma for getting illegal purchase of medical books for his child is sufficient evidence to collaborate the fact that huge purchase of medical books from 2010 to 2015 was similarly meant to please the children of some influential officers/faculty members considered to be in good books and expert in keeping the Vice Chancellor in good humour being sycophants. Sources were of the view that purchase of medical books in University of Jammu seems to be a big scandal still unearthed in its totality due to nexus of Central Library and university administration allowing such a scam to continue unabated since years. |
