Work resumes to build boundary wall of CRPF's Lethpora Camp
2/14/2018 10:22:12 PM
Agencies
New Delhi, Feb 14: Work has been resumed to build the gaps in the boundary wall at the rear of the Lethpora camp which was attacked by militants on January 2.
After the attack on Sunjwan camp, the army faced flak for lapses in security that were found in the boundary fence. Poor security at the boundary of the camp was cited as one of the main reasons for the attack.
The security fence near the camp's family quarters was poorly managed at many places and usage of tin to cover the gaps in the boundary was found.
The security agencies have been investigating if the militants could have taken advantage of the lapses in security to enter the military camp.
The wall which surrounds the 200 acre campus did not cover the rear flank. The CRPF has since moved to cover the chinks in the armour.
Barely a month after the dastardly new year's eve fidayeen attack on its group centre, the CRPF has refurbished and fast tracked the completion of wall, what many considered as Achilles heel of the force in Pulwama in South Kashmir.
Top level sources in the force confirmed that post the attack, a decision was taken to expedite the completion of wall which had been pending for several years.
The construction of the wall was stalled two years ago after the contract awarded to Central Public Works Department (CPWD) got mired in controversy.
Sources in CRPF said that the land had been caught up in a legal tangle. Other reason for delay in construction of the perimeter wall was that there were frequent hartals and the weather had been inclement in the last few months.
But this time around, work on the boundary fence has been resumed under the watchful eye of CRPF personnel in winters itself.
While the Army had claimed that after Uri attack it spent about Rs 364 crore in tightening security of the camps, suicide squads still managed to breach security at several camps.
In the wake of rising attacks, the CRPF said it regularly carried audits of its camps.
