Sacking Drabu Mehbooba Mufti keen to establish her authority
3/14/2018 8:51:44 PM
Minor fissures have crept in the ruling PDP after the Finance Minister, Dr Haseeb Drabu was sacked as Minister. Already the conflict between the PDP and the BJP is on the rise and an indication to this effect is evident from the clashes between the PDP and the BJP workers as a section of people demanded district status for Nowshera which is at present part of Rajouri district. In the clashes five people were injured. And see the hasty step taken by the Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, in sacking Drabu her trusted man who has been treated as the architect of the PDP alliance with the BJP. It was being treated by some PDP legislators as sacking of Drabu unceremoniously. Some of the PDP legislators want Chief Minister to have given time to Drabu to explain his stand. Some of the PDP leaders suspect that Mehbooba acted hastily under pressure from the National Conference and the separatists, who together hold a firm view that the Kashmir issue is political issue and needs to be settled through talks Ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) legislator Javed Beig has batted for Haseeb Drabu after he was unceremoniously stripped of the portfolio. Beig said the decision was akin to the decision taken by the Congress when it removed Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as the Chief Minister of Jammu Kashmir in 2006 when he had been successfully running the government in the State "Following that whatever has been happening in the State is for everyone to see," he said. Beig said another such decision was taken when senior PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Beig was recalled by Sayeed as the Deputy Chief Minister of the State. Beig said he listened to Drabu's speech, and it is apparent that he was trying to make some other point, "May be he did not say in a manner he did not wish to say but the party should at least have given him a week's time to respond to Mehbooba's querries and had he been adamant, he could have been removed Beig said PDP leadership had acted in haste to remove Drabu.
Drabu is a human being and as a human being, anybody can err but should the party remove the person despite his complete dedication of being with the party and the party president till the end of his life. Beig said Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti is wise enough but the party leadership which took the decision of stripping Drabu of the ministry should have given him a week's time to explain his position rather than buckling under the pressure of the separatists and opposition National Conference. The National Conference and the separatists have been shouting loud that Kashmir issue being political needs settlement through talks. The NC wants talks between India and Pakistan for the resolution of the Kashmir issue. But the separatists support triangular talks so that they (separatists) too are involved on the plea that separatists have equal stakeholders.
Actually Mehbooba wanted to establish her authority in the sense that when she can sack a senior PDP leader and Finance Minister, Dr Haseeb Drabu, she can do it to the lesser mortals. Of late the BJP legislators and ministers were treating her lightly and she wanted to convey a message, that too indirectly, to them. Either behave or lose power at whatever cost it may be. The way Hindu Ekta Manch, a body close to the RSS, communalized the abduction, rape and murder of an eight year old Asifa in Hiranagar is viewed as a challenge to her authority when the HEM simply was demanding a probe by the CBI because its activists had no faith in the crime branch investigation. And the demand for CBI probe is nothing uncommon. But Mehbooba's decision to sack senior Finance Minister, Dr Drabu, was to convey a message to the HEM that Mehbooba is not the person who could be taken for a ride. Her action against Drabu is a signal of her displeasure against BJP because Drabu had been the architect forging an alliance between the PDP and the BJP.
