Paucity of staff hits postal services in State

Jammu, Mar 29: The Jammu and Kashmir Circle of Postal Department is grappling with an acute shortage of manpower, as 683 posts of Postmaster, Postal Assistant, and Inspector are vacant for past several years, affecting the postal services badly.
"Despite repeated pleas to fill these vacancies to the government by the department concerned, important posts are still vacant", said an official wishing anonymity.
As per official figures available with Early Times, there are 683 posts of different position lying vacant in Jammu Kashmir Circle.
They include 16 posts of Inspector/Assistant Superintendent, 58 posts of Postmaster grade (I, II &III)/Lower selection grade /Higher selection grade, and 204 posts of Postman.
Besides these, the posts of Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant and Multi Tasking Staff are considered to be backbone of the department. But nearly 365 posts including 175 of Multi tasking staff and 230 posts of postal assistant, are not filled up by the department which is hampering the functioning of the department.
Sources informed that the department claims that recruitment is continuous process by holding department examination at circle level.
But in the face of slow pace of recruitment, more vacancies are created due to retirement, promotion and death and deputation of the employees, as a result of which the Jammu and Kashmir circle is facing severe crisis.
Sources further said that that few years back, the Jammu and Kashmir Postal Circle, had advertised the post of Multi Tasking Staff (MTS) with an aimed to fill up the vacancy-wherein thousand of youth across state had applied for it enthusiastically, but due to unknown reason, the selection process for the post is yet to be not completed.
"Owing to acute shortage of staff, a long queue of visitors could be seen in every post office and the visitors have to wait more than two hours to get their work done", sources said.
