Assaulting scribes, cops a favourite pastime of separatists Govt soft on anti-nationals

Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 28: The government, it seems has different yardsticks for the separatists and the commoners. Even the police seems reluctant to act against the separatists.
The police men failed to act today when JKLF chairman, Yasin Malik tried to assault the police men in Khanyar Srinagar and obstructed the lawful duty of men in uniform. There are also several incidents when separatists either threatened the journalists or policemen or assaulted them.
A police spokesman said that Malik and his accomplice obstructed the lawful duty of policemen who requested them to produce registration papers of the car in which they were travelling.
He said that a police team deployed on a routine naka duty intercepted the car in which Malik was travelling. "The travellers inside the car were requested to produce the registration papers of the said car. However, the travellers onboard which included JKLF Chief Yasin Malik and Bashir Kashmiri instead of producing papers created obstruction in the lawful duty," he said.
In a video that has gone viral, Malik is seen abusing the JK policemen. "Who the hell you are," he is seen saying in the video.
Similarly, in 2016, he slapped a police officer. The entire incident was caught on camera, in which the he can be seen slapping and attacking policemen, while his supporters continue to hurl abuses at them. Although, he was arrested but released soon without taking any action.
"There is always a pressure on police when we arrest any separatist leader. There are several cases registered against Malik for assaulting policemen or journalists but no action has been taken," a senior police official said.
In 2017, reporter of a national news channel was attacked by Malik.. She had then gone to take his reaction on special investigative report - Hurriyat Truth Tapes - when Malik snatched her phone and smashed it to smithereens.
In 2009, JKLF supporters attacked Shabnam Qayoom, editor of a local newspaper. The JKLF supporters attacked him in a press conference. After which Qayoom had said: "Supporters from JKLF are giving threats to my life and also are threatening to ransack my house and property."
The supporters of Mirwaiz Umar Group had also assaulted Qayoom.
In 2015, Hurriyat Conference headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani had warned Kashmiri reporters working with national news channels asking them to mend their ways or face dire action. The threat had come a day after Kashmir based correspondents of national media agencies highlighted the waving of Pakistani flag in Masarat Alam led separatist rally.
Calling National news channels as the mouth pieces of intelligence agencies, Geelani led Hurriyat had then said that they will expose the reporters by name in "public if they continue their betrayal to Kashmiri nation".
Several journalists had then gone into hiding. There are several other examples when journalists were either threatened by separatists or attacked. Most of the journalists prefer not to do stories against separatists because of life threats.
"I had once done a story that there were 300 people in a separatist's rally. The other day I received a call from this separatist leader and he threatened me why I had written there were only 200 instead of 5000 people were there," a Kashmiri journalist said.
At several times, the media houses were also attacked by the separatists and ransacked computers. Sources said the police too was reluctant to act against these separatists if the complaint is lodged.
