Even the PDP has had to berate Gupta for his gaffe
5/11/2018 11:20:06 PM
Mystery shrouds power sharing between the Kashmir centric PDP and the Jammu centric BJP.And the latest is the U-turn given by the state BJP leaders over the demand for Ramzan and Amarnath yatra ceasefire. The rift is evident from the way the National Conference and the Congress have berated the newly sworn in Deputy Chief Minister, Kavinder Gupta, for having described the recent Rassana rape and murder case as a minor incident.Gupta's statement, soon after taking over as Deputy Chief Minister, has come handy for the National Conference working President, Omar Abdullah, for hitting at the PDP for its unconcern about the gravity of the incident. And senior PDP leader and the Government spokesman Naeem Akhtar had to criticize Gupta for controversial remarks. The Deputy Chief Minister Kavinder Gupta's remarks that Rassana rape was a "minor incident" has caused outrage in the State with ruling PDP and opposition parties criticising him for his controversial remarks. Senior PDP leader and government spokesman Naeem Akhtar said Kavinder Gupta's remark is a careless comment given the fact that Prime Minister and President of India have condemned this criminal act in strongest possible words. "The careless comment by DyCM is in total contradiction of the statements of Prime Minister and the President of India. The concern shown at the international level triggered a change in the law making this criminal act a punishable offence and awarding capital punishment to the culprits," he said. Akhtar said the government has proved that it won't compromise quality of investigation and determination for justice to the Rassana victim. Opposition National Conference working president and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah hit out at the coalition government. "What justice can one expect from Mehbooba Mufti when her Deputy CM calls the rape & murder of an 8 year old "a minor incident that the media shouldn't focus on," Omar tweeted. In another tweeted, he said, "2 BJP ministers removed in J&K for attending a pro-rapist rally & a MLA who is reported to have attended the same rally is promoted as a minister. Why are the BJP/ Mehbooba Mufti confused about where they stand on the Rassana rape". The State Congress spokesman slammed Gupta for his controversial remarks. "DyCM is holding a responsible position. How can he justify the horrific rape and murder of an eight-year innocent girl," he said, adding, "How cay DyCM say the incident was a small incident. It shows how people of the State are being treated by the coalition government" In fact Kavinder Gupta has given a hammer in the hand of the National Conference and the Congress to strike the head of the coalition Government. Had he remained silent on the issue the NC and the Congress would have not gone out with a hammer in their hands. It is surprising when the BJP gave nod to Mehbooba to remove Lal Singh and Chander Prakash from the cabinet after they attended a rally in support of the rapists where they only demanded that the case be probed by the CBI why the same BJP has cleared the name of Jasrotia for the cabinet berth when he too was present in the rally where Lal Singh and Chander Prakash were seen shouting slogans. Kavinder Gupta should have, if he had to say something about the Rassana incident, said that the BJP is for a probe by the CBI whether the incident is minor or looks like a horror story. In fact Gupta has, while defending his elevation to the seat of Deputy Chief Minister, described the rape and murder of eight-year girl as a minor incident and his statement may, Gupta believes, allow him peace in Kathua and Jammu but what about the valley where besides the political leaders, including the Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, is highly concerned about the incident and that is the reason that she has shown more trust in the crime branch investigation than on the CBI. Since the case is yet to be decided by the Supreme Court Gupta has already issued a judgement by declaring the incident as minor. That is bad politics and he may be in trouble.
