Peace lovers are dismayed over militants forcing Govt to suspend ceasefire | | | Well those supporting peace initiatives feel dismayed over the way the centre has decided not to extend ceasefire beyond the Eid celebrations. And thanks to the BJP led NDA Government for fulfilling its commitment of sticking to unilateral ceasefire during the month of Ramzan. The challenges before the Government have not ended even after the Government's decision to end the ceasefire. And the counter insurgency operations have begun giving common people the reason for feeling scared. Political leaders belonging to the mainstream politics feel dismayed over the way neither the separatists, their supporters nor the militants responded positively to the Government's plan to declare unilateral ceasefire. Had these separatists and militants appreciated the step the Government had taken Kashmir would have experienced peace and there would have been less of incidents of killing of civilians. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has expressed her disappointment at the way the "other side" sabotaged the Central government's peace initiative of Ramzan ceasefire. Condemning the provocations and the violence, she said the agent provocateurs sabotaged the ceasefire that promised the much-needed relief to the common man during the holy month. "A good peace initiative that could have transformed the lives of the people and changed the landscape of Kashmir for the better was nixed by the response from the other side (militants). It is unfortunate that the whole initiative was consumed by violence," Mehbooba has stated. "It is very sad and bad that the other side sabotaged it. It is clear that the sigh of relief that the common people had was not to the liking of the other side," she has observed. On the other hand National Conference Vice president, Omar Abdullah has described the step to end ceasefire as Government's failure and he is right when he blamed militants and separatists that they failed to respond positively to the Government plan. "It was expected that everyone will cooperate in ensuring the success of this initiative. While the security forces have displayed exemplary restraint during this period, terrorists have continued to attack on civilians and security forces, resulting in deaths and injuries." Says the dismayed Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh. Omar Abdullah, former Chief Minister and leader of National Conference, described the announcement to end ceasefire as the "failure of everyone who wanted to give peace a chance". The indications that ceasefire might not be extended had already appeared as NSA Ajit Doval had said that "it's purpose is served". "We wanted to give respite to the common man in the Valley during Ramzan, so that they could observe the holy month peacefully and we stuck to our stance," he had said in an interview to a news channel. The Union Home Minister's announcement to end the unilateral ceasefire that had continued throughout Ramzan comes at a time when militants carried out some high-profile attacks, including the abduction and killing of a soldier, which mounted pressure on the Union Government to not extend the ceasefire. The abduction and killing of Rifleman Aurangzeb, who was posted in south Kashmir, on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr also coincided with the assassination of the editor of a local daily outside his office in the heart of Srinagar. This way separatists and militants are to be blamed for the failure of the Government to give peace a chance in Kashmir. |
