Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, June 19: The Bhartiya Janta Party's decision to withdraw support from the PDP led alliance shocked the PDP leaders who were clueless about the decision and came to know about it through the media.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti submitted her resignation to Governor NN Vohra on Tuesday shortly after the Bharatiya Janata Party pulled out of the coalition government.
However, the PDP leaders were not aware till they came to know through media. "We did not know that BJP will withdraw the support," senior PDP leader and former Minister Javaid Mustafa Mir said.
Another senior leader, Naeem Akhtar, who too was minister and government spokesperson, said, "We did not know. We came through media."
Another PDP leader, wishing not to be named said, "When the BJP ministers were called to New Delhi on Monday, we thought they may be discussing about the Lok Sabha polls going to be held later this year. But we were surprised when we heard that BJP withdrew the support. Most of us were at Civil Secretariat when we got to know through media," he said.
The PDP-BJP formed alliance in March 2015. After the death of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, his daughter Mehbooba Mufti took over th the Chief Minister of the state on April 4, 2016. The PDP-BJP alliance had hit several controversies and leaders of both parties had openly criticized to each other on several occasions in the past.
Soon after taking over as CM, Mehbooba faced her first test at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar where non-Kashmiri students clashed with Kashmiri students and the state police over a cricket match. This became a national issue and the NIT was shut for weeks.
This controversy was followed by the killing of five persons in north Kashmir's Handwara town. Within days after Handwara episode, a controversy triggered over the government's proposal of establishing Sainik and Pandit colonies.
The implementation of the controversial National Food Security Act (NFSA) was a serious challenge for the PDP-BJP government, which had turned a law and order problem situation in the state.
The Mehbooba Mufti led government faced its toughest phase when Hizbul Mujahidin commander Burhan Wani along with two of his accomplices were killed in south Kashmir's Kulgam district on July 8.
Mehbooba Mufti's statement triggered a massive controversy when she called "anti-national" to all those demanding abrogation of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution.
In September 2016, PDP's Srinagar MP and the party's founder member, Tariq Hameed Karra, left both his Lok Sabha seat and the PDP, terming its alliance with the BJP "unnatural and unethical".
On July 24, 2017, the NIA arrested seven Hurriyat leaders. It has been reported that she was not in favour of the crackdown. Mehbooba, who even reached out to arch rival Farooq Abdullah of the NC on the matter, warned, "If the special constitutional status of J&K is tampered with, or the Permanent Resident Act (35A) removed, there will be no one to shoulder the Indian flag in the Valley."
The by-polls of Srinagar parliamentary constituency witnessed only 6.5 percent voting, Following which, it was decided not to hold by-polls of Anantnag Lok Sabha seat in view of "conducive" environment.
Government also faced criticism when son of a senior PDP leader's name figured in the list of appointees in Khadi Village Industries Board.
She also dropped Haseeb Drabu from the council of ministers, who was a main architect of the PDP-BJP government.
