BARAMULLA, June 19: A 22-year-old youth who was missing from May 23 along with the SPO guarding the BJP leader, has been arrested from Rafiabad area of this north Kashmir district. While as on Monday late evening there was a brief exchange of fire between militants and security forces in Kupwara district.
A senior police official said that on June 18, a joint naka was laid by Police Component Rafiabad, 32-RR & 92 Bn CRPF near Dachanpora Crossing at Rohama.
Police official said during checking, one motorcycle bearing registration number JK09-2055 coming from Dachanpora towards Rohama having two pillion riders on it, tried to escape from the spot, adding the alert Naka Party tactfully chased and overpowered the duo.
During preliminary questioning, they revealed their identities as Arif Ahmad Malla son of Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Malla resident of Shitloo, Rafiabad and Rayees Ahmad Naik son of Ali Mohammad Naik resident of DH-Pora, Kulgam, the police official told ET.
The police official said that on checking, 01 Pistol, 03 Pistol rounds and a Matrix Sheet were recovered from Arif Ahmad Malla and from Rayees Ahmad Naik, a Hand Grenade and a Matrix Sheet were recovered. Police has lodged a case vide FIR number 48/2018 U/S 2/25 IA. Act, 13 ULA Act that stands registered in Police Station Panzalla. During further course of investigation, it surfaced that the duo were active Over Ground Workers (OGW's) of LeT outfit.
Among the duo, Arif Ahmad Malla is also involved in decamping of weapons of SPO. Further investigation of the case is going on adding more arrests are expected, the police official added.
Meanwhile on late evening of June 18, army and militants exchanged a brief gunfire in Dedikote forest area of north Kashmir's Kupwara district. A police officer had said that militants attacked army's patrolling party of 4 VIKAS, sub-unit of 47 RR in Dedikote forest area in Vilgam today evening. The army had retaliated the fire, triggering of a brief exchange of gunfire, the police official had told Early Times.
Following the incident, additional reinforcement was rushed to the site, he said, adding that a massive search operation was launched to trace out the group of militants.
