6/30/2018 10:36:55 PM
Early Times Report

Srinagar, June 30: Even as Governor NN Vohra Saturday reviewed the situation arising from flood alert in Kashmir, people largely found a sigh a relief saying that official machinery was on the toes as compared to scene during elected governments.
Since morning, when flood alert was sounded in most parts of Kashmir, the civil and police administration looked proactive to be prepared to meet any eventuality.
Apart from District Development Commissioners, the police and even the Health department officials were on toes issuing helpline and related statements, while most of them were seen active on the ground.
By around 11:30 AM, the Kashmir police had released its helpline for various areas of the valley.
"Jammu and Kashmir Police has set up help lines across valley for the general public to provide any assistance required in view of the incessant rainfall. The help lines shall function round-the-clock to tackle the situation arising from the inclement weather situation prevalent in the valley," said the police handout.
The Directorate of Health Kashmir also kept its teams ready to meet any eventuality, while the civil officials spend the day visiting affected areas.
By afternoon, district administration of Srinagar said the relief camps were in place in the vulnerable areas and that people should contact helpline.
A delegation said during the elected governments, people need to knock doors of the elected representatives to get respite in such calamities but that during the Governor's rule, official machinery looked responsive to public woes. "I had never seen Babus so concerned towards public complaints before," said a delegation at press enclave.
Earlier in the day Governor had reviewed preparedness to meet any eventuality.
As per an official handout the Governor directed Chief Secretary to put in place a reliable communication system for the senior officers who are at the helm for managing a flood situation; closely monitor water levels at Dal Lake and check the proper functioning of the lake's water gates; devise an effective arrangement for the prompt mobilization of Rescue Teams; advance positioning of boats; ensure availability of doctors within 15 minutes, for emergency duties; timely alerts for areas which are under possible flood threat along with their identified evacuation sites, the spokesperson said.
The Governor directed Basheer Khan, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, to alert ground level staff who would perform emergency duties and set up Joint Control Rooms with all concerned agencies.
