Cancer Institute project in cold storage for last 5 yrs
8/2/2018 10:49:50 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 2: Owing to lack of interest of the Jammu and Kashmir Health and Medical Education Department, the project of establishing cancer institutes in Jammu as well as Kashmir has been gathering dust as no efforts were made to release funds from the Union Government for last more than 5 years.
Here it needs to be mentioned that keeping in view, the increase in the number of cancer patients, the then Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Ghulam Nabi Azad had sanctioned five Medical Colleges as well as two Tertiary Cancer Centres for Jammu and Kashmir under the National Cancer Control Programme.
Sources said that in the year 2014-15 the then Union Government announced establishment of two Cancer Institutes in Jammu and Kashmir, one in Government Medical College Jammu and another in Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura in Srinagar at a cost of Rs 120 crore each. The SKIMS Cancer Institute is ready for commissioning anytime but GMC Jammu didn't get required permission for the establishment of the same due to lackadaisical approach of the concerned department despite the lapse of five years.
"The land for establishing same in Jammu had been identified inside the premises of Super Specialty Hospital at Resham Ghar Colony in Jammu a few years ago but years have been passed but the not even single penny has been released in this regard, sources further told.
Sources further said non-availability of cancer treatment, cancer patients have to be carried all the way to either Chandigarh or Delhi for treatment, which is a very expensive and cumbersome exercise for poor patients. It speaks a lot about the inefficiency of concerned functionaries and total disregard for providing much-needed facility to the people of Jammu.
Besides, the source further claimed that existing infrastructure is pathetically inadequate looking into the increasing cases of cancer both in Jammu and Kashmir regions as there is the shortage of staff, doctors, and latest technology.
