Will Imran handle Kashmir affairs unlike his predecessors?
8/5/2018 11:04:12 PM
It was expected that with the
change of guard in Pakistan the security scenario in the Kashmir valley may register improvement. If the incidents of violence and encounters between the security forces and militants are any guide it seems that there is no improvement in the Kashmir valley. And the dreaded Lashkar-e-Toiba is quite active so are the local militants. In fact since the General elections in Pakistan the number of local militants has increased indicating that the political developments in the state of Jammu and Kashmir contributes to the rise of incidents of violence. Four more suspected militants were killed in a fresh gunfight at Kilora in Shopian district in south Kashmir taking the militant toll in the operation to five. Even after the fall of the coalition Government the security scenario continues to be alarming in South Kashmir. One top local Lashkar-e-Toiba militant was killed in the initial encounter between militants and security forces in the area.
The anti-militancy operation was launched recently on the basis of information about the presence of militants in the area. Four more militants have been killed at Shopian. A total of five militants have been killed so far from whom large quantities of weapons have been recovered On Friday evening, a top Lashkar militant, Umer Malik of Malikgund Shopian, who was active since August 2017 was killed. Meanwhile, two suspects were detained by security forces at Pantha Chowk on the outskirts of Srinagar on Saturday morning and two hand grenades were recovered. The two were being questioned but indications are that the two were on a mission of attacking security pickets and convoys.
Even pessimists do not foresee any positive change in the level of infiltration of militants and in the rate of incidents of violence. Yes, Imran Khan is a good intentioned leader but the Pakistan Army could guide him as far as his Kashmir policy is concerned.. Imran may not get a free hand as far as reversing the Kashmir policy because the Army functionaries in Pakistan decide anything that concerns Kashmir. Imran is a seasoned leader but his art of Government function is limited and the Army in Pakistan may take advantage of it. Well Imran Khan may not be able to dictate terms to the top Army functionaries but as Prime Minister he has to assert his authority there lies his success.
