| Cloudburst in Leh triggers flashflood, property damage | | | Early Times Report
Leh, Aug 9: A recent incident of cloudburst has been reported in Leh area of Ladakh district in Jammu & Kashmir on Wednesday, causing widespread damages to the places in proximity of Leh. The incident took place last night bringing heavy downpour, triggering flash floods. The cloudburst has caused immense damages to the property and vehicles, mostly in the Saboo and Shey villages, 10 kilometers from Leh. However, no loss of human life has been reported.
In fact, prior to this, the cloudburst was reported in Shichling village of remote Spiti valley which wreaked havoc on Sunday night. Due to this, water and debris also entered many houses. As such, Leh and Ladakh are desert areas that do not receive Monsoon current. Rains generally occur over the region due to the passage of any active Western Disturbance. In general, Monsoon remains weak over the area with not many showers occurring. However, the region is vulnerable to natural calamities of cloudbursts which happened the last day. The total amount of rains that Leh has recorded in the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Wednesday stands at 8.4 mm. Due to the incident, several areas also experienced communication snaps and power outages. However, relief and rescue teams have been deployed.
The Western Disturbance in the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir can be said to be the reason for the cloudburst and some heavy rains over the higher reaches of Gulmarg and Banihal amounting to 34.4 mm and 14.5 mm respectively. Now, the weather system is seen moving eastward and hence the region is expected to clear up in the next 24 hours. These incidents are freak and hence are difficult to catch and hence caution is advisable. |
