BARAMULLA, Aug 9: Militancy related incidents have risen in north Kashmir from past couple of months, as the death toll in the ongoing gunfight in Dooniwari forests of Rafiabad mounted to five with the death of another militant Thursday morning.
Militants killed in Rafiabad's Vejj Top identified all as foreigners and were affiliated with Lashkar-e-Toiba militant outfit.
An official said that a militant was killed today morning in the firefight raging since yesterday morning in the dense forests of Dooniwari.
Director General of Police SP Vaid confirmed the death of fifth militant on Twitter. He said the fifth militant was killed after he fired this morning.
Four militants were killed while an army commando was injured in the firefight yesterday, Srinagar based Defence spokesperson, Col Rajesh Kalia told ET.
He said the fighting started after a joint party of the police and the army launched searches in the area following a tip-off about the presence of militants.
Meanwhile a joint team of security forces launched search operation in the dense woods of Kupwara district, following the presence of militants in the area.
A top police official said that, from past few days there were reports about the presence of some foreign militants in the areas, have specific inputs, a joint team of army and SOG launched CASO in Thayan area of Kupwara.
At the time of filling this story, the search operation was on to trace the militants in the area.
This newspaper has learnt from its sources that, that on Thursday evening a joint team of security forces lay siege to Yankara Binner of Baramulla town.
A joint team of security forces including army's 46 RR, Police, SOG and CRPF sealed Yankara Binner following the presence of militants in the area.
Pertinently there is a close route of Dooniwari Rafiabad and Yankara, where five militants were killed in the ongoing gun battle from yesterday afternoon, said sources.
Sources said that it seems that from past couple of months, militancy related incidents have risen a bit in north Kashmir villages, army foiled many infiltration bids in Gurez, Uri, Kupwara and Rafiabad sectors.
