Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Sept 14: Students desirous of clearing their examination from University of Kashmir under the mercy chance category have been pushed to the wall by varsity authorities since they would have to pay a huge sum for appearing in the examinations.
A notice issued by Assistant Controller of Examinations has said that a candidate seeking mercy chance to clear the examination would have to pay Rs. 5,000 per paper for appearing in such an examination. It has been mentioned in the notice that the candidate would have to pay Rs. 5,000 as charges for one paper.
"The online examination forms for eligible candidates of M Ed annual pattern (batch 2013 backlog and division improvement) and mercy chance candidates of batches 2010, 2011 and 2012 shall be available on the university website www.kashmiruniversity.net from 13/9/2018 to 20/9/2018 for backlog/division improvement and from 22/9/2018 to 26/9/2018 along with fee receipt," reads the notice.
The notice further reads that the candidates shall be examined as per the syllabus/pattern prescribed for batch 2013 (1st and 2nd semester) one year scheme. It says that the examination fee should favour Registrar, University of Kashmir. The notice has been issued under endorsement number F (M.Ed-Exam) KU/2018 dated 12/9/2018.
The notice says that a candidate who has to appear up to three papers in the examination under the backlog category shall have to pay Rs. 800 as examination fee. It adds that the examination fee under this category for students appearing in six subjects is Rs. 1600. It says that the examination fee for more than six papers of fresh would be Rs. 2300.
The notice says that a candidate falling under the backlog and division improvement category would have to pay Rs. 350 as EMF and service charges. Such a fee should favour Controller of Examinations, University of Kashmir. The notice says that candidates seeking mercy chance shall have to pay Rs. 5,000 per paper (for two papers).
Students in general more those desirous of appearing in the mercy chance examination have expressed surprise over the 'exorbitant' examination fee saying that the same is out of their reach. They said that the fee should have reasonable so that there is no hole in their pocket whatsoever.
"University of Kashmir is a public university and not a private one. Welfare of the students has been the motive of the varsity in the past, but the things have changed of late. The varsity authorities should look into the matter and order for the revision of the examination fee at the earliest," said a group of students while sharing views with Early Times.
The students expressed dismay that University of Kashmir wants to generate the income by resorting to unprecedented increase in the examination fee especially for students seeking mercy chance. They said that the mandate of the varsity was to provide free education and not to make education out of reach for students.
