Police officer facilitates opium smuggling for money

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Sept 19: A Police Post (PP) Incharge in southern area of district Jammu is accused of facilitating opium trafficking for money. According to sources, he is hand in glove with a notorious smuggler who stays in the jurisdictional area of the PP. "The PP Incharge is earning handsome money by providing logistical support to the opium dealer of his area. Not only this, the police officer even attended the lavish parties thrown by the narcotic smuggler on several occasions. The motive behind arranging such parties is to send across a message to small time smugglers that they need not have any fears in carrying out their illegal trade," sources told Early Times. Sources said that the said police officer was earlier posted in a police station of the southern part of district Jammu adding that after sometime he used his links to get a posting as PP Incharge in of the Police Posts of the same police station as he was well aware that if gets the charge of the Police Post then he could make easy money.
"After assuming the charge of the police post, the Sub-Inspector (SI) ranked police officer first tightened the noose around those involved in the illegal trading of kerosene oil then he took control of the gamblers which gave him an opportunity to made quick bucks," said sources.
"Now, the SI is cementing his relations with a notorious narcotic smuggler of his area. The police officer is working in tandem with the opium dealer. Everyday opium worth thousands of rupees is getting sold in the area. Customers of the banned substance are reaching the area from far off places," sources added.
Sources further said that a fixed monthly amount is being given to the SI for keeping a blind eye to whatever is going on in the area following which the police officer has preferred to remain silent.
Sources said that the SI is also taking help from the narcotic smuggler in solving several routine matters brought up in the Police Post and in return getting cash through the medium of his smuggler friend.
"The SI has set up such a mechanism to carry out his activities that even his seniors have no knowledge about his actions. Majority of the cases are getting resolved at the narcotic smuggler's residence rather than the Police Post," said sources.
"Isn't it ironical that on one hand the police department has launched special drives against the menace of drug addiction and several high officials are burning the midnight oil to combat the flow of drugs while on the other hand such a SI is extending an olive branch to the narcotic smuggler to expand his base," sources added.
