Alarming situation

Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 8: Reports emanating from the terror-infested Kashmir Valley are not inspiring. Reports are frightening. Frightening all the more because some of those appointed to maintain law and order in J&K in the vital police department are deserting the department, decamping with sophisticated weapons and joining the militants' ranks. Their conduct has disturbed the powers-that-be in the state and at the centre. It is only natural.
As per one of "internal report" of the J&K police, "as many as 12 J&K policemen have decamped with around 30 weapons in last three years". Relevant documents, according to reports, have claimed that "as many as 12 policemen and two army personnel have joined the militant ranks and managed to take away 30 weapons". "On October 5, the police arrested BSF constable Shakir Wani, 29, along with another local for their alleged links with Hizbul Mujahideen," reports said.
Sources say that "Wani was a Hizb-ul-Mujahideen over-ground worker and provided logistic support to militants". As per the J&K police's claim, "Wani was also assigned (the task) to recruit youth into the militant ranks" and "there is a challenge that the police face from within".
The reports have obviously raised concern over such dangerous incidents, especially in the wake of the latest operation of Special Police Official Adil Bashir. Addil Bashir had decamped with eight weapons from the official residence of People's Democratic Party legislator Aijaz Mir, who is also being questioned.
It was not for the first time that J&K witnessed rebellion in J&K police. In 1993 as well, J&K had witnessed its first major rebellion in J&K police. That year, "over 1,000 policemen took shelter in police control room protesting the killing of their colleague in Army custody". The Governor administration had to call army and paramilitary forces to "take over the building".
It is alarming situation. Police, army and paramilitary forces' fundamental duty is to maintain law and order, protect borders and maintain internal security. If the police or any other security establishments face challenges from within, then the authorities have to sit up and find where things went wrong? This is precisely what is happening in J&K with the authorities taking all precautions aimed at appointing right men at right places. But the authorities have to walk several miles to ensure that Wanis and Addils get the place they deserved.
