Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 19: What can be called open loot of state exchequer under the garb of so called development, the Jammu & Kashmir Forest Department has realized mere Rs 46 Crores for allowing felling of around 45,000 trees inside the forests of Pir Panjaal area of Rajouri , Poonch , Shopian and Budgam. As per reliable sources at an average mere Rs 10,000 has been realized from each tree aged between 30 - 150 years.
Sources in Forest department have revealed that there has been huge bungling by senior Forest Officers while making assessment for realizing compensation from the private power company M/S Sterlite and NRSS XXIX as the revenue collected in lieu of 45,000 trees is 3 to 4 times less than the actual market value. Sources say that at an average an amount of Rs 50,000 was to be realized from each tree of Kail , Fir and Deodar but mere Rs 10,000 have been collected from the company which clearly indicates that officers of forest department are involved in corrupt practices. " We demand that a high level probe be initiated into this whole scam so that officers in Forest department who have caused a huge loss to state exchequer are exposed " said Naseer Ahmad of Bufliaz Poonch
As reported already after destroying more than 40,000 trees in Pir Panjaal belt for establishing 440 KV DC transmission line , another company Power Grid Corporation Ltd (PGCL) axed hundreds of Kial and Deodar trees in Kangan forests of Ganderbal. The pics had gone viral on social media during last month and authorities are yet to initiate a probe against the officials.
As reported already 40,000 forest trees were destroyed by private power transmission companies namely NRSS Ltd and Sterlite Power in the forests of Pir Panjaal from Samba to Baramulla Amargrah via Reasi , Rajouri and Poonch areas including Shopian. Chief Conservator of Forests Kashmir Farooq Geelani had admitted to this fact while speaking to a Srinagar based newspaper few days back. Early Times was the first newspaper to report this mass vandalization of forests in Pir Panjaal belt of state last year.
Deputy Commissioner Budgam initiated probe against the illegal felling of trees by a private power transmission company which has allegedly axed hundreds of trees in Budgam district alone. DC Budgam vide its order No : DCB/PS-Enquiry /439-42 Dated 3/9/2018 has appointed Additional Deputy Commissioner Budgam to probe into the matter. The ADC while submitting the report had refuted the claims of local villagers and activists. Infact ADC had recommended action to be taken against the persons who exposed this scam on social media and other newspapers. Activists have been demanding a Judicial Probe into the matter. As the news about Kangan forest damages got viral , the axing of forest trees in Budgam has been authenticated. Forest officials are playing safe and are not responding to the negative comments being made by people on facebook , twitter and watsapp.
As reported on August 18th by Early Times , the role of Jammu & Kashmir Forest department is under scanner as the department has allegedly failed to recover adequate compensation from the power company Sterlite Power which is executing a project under Northern Region System Strengthening Scheme (NRSS-29). Sources have revealed that hundreds of forest trees have been axed from Baramulla to Rajouri. The transmission line of the NRSS -XXIX passes through several districts of state including Budgam , Shopian ,Reasi , Poonch and Rajouri.
