Civilian slaughter by militants put Shopian police under scanner again
11/19/2018 10:44:54 PM
Early Times Report
srinagar, Nov 19: The recent slaughter of two civilians in Shopian by militants has yet again brought the Jammu and Kashmir Police under scanner for their alleged failure to bring situation under control as also to prevent loss of the precious human lives in the south Kashmir district.
Last week, the Hizbul militants killed two civilians in spine chilling incidents. While the outfit released video of how the 17-year-old boy was killed by the militants, the throat of the other victim was slit. Pictures and videos of both the incidents went viral on social media.
Observers said the gory incidents of militants "gaining dominance" in the region hint at the police failure to tackle the problem in the district that continues to be the "hotbed of militancy."
It was reliably learnt that the Raj Bhawan, through its advisors has picked up the matter of "Shopian situation" with the Director General of Police. Sources said "remedial measures were expected in December."
In the last five odd months, around a dozen cops have been killed by militants while a similar number of weapons were snatched.
With no let up in such attacks, in the latest, the civilians are again being targeted.
The policing in Shopian have been allegedly so miserable that militants even attack the main police station in the town.
In September, the militants had managed to kill a policeman at the main entrance of the police station and decamped with his weapon. "When even the police station is not safe, the safety of the civilians can only be imagined," said a retired police officer from Shopian on the condition of anonymity.
The residents of Shopian said if the police had taken due measures the innocent killings by militants would not have taken place.
Sources said the officials have themselves being terming some of the areas in Shopian as "danger zones where militants have an upper hand."
"Even the police movement in such areas has been difficult," said one SHO on the condition of anonymity.
Interestingly, however, the situation in Shopian was largely under control even during the 2016 unrest.
Sources said the police official who was posted in the region that time has opted for deputation outside state.
Sources said the police many handover the Shopian in hands of some other official who has track record of bringing situation under control in such areas.
