srinagar, Nov 24: Politicians have a habit of doing small things and then projecting the same in a big manner with photos assuming centre stage in such small activities.
Not to talk of the seasoned politicians a person who recently took a plunge into politics resorted to a photo session while claiming that he wants to improve public transport system in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir. Interestingly, the politician boarded three buses to cover a distance of two and half kilometers.
Newly elected Deputy Mayor of Srinagar Sheikh Imran travelled in buses from Dalgate up to Batmaloo in order to know the problems being faced by people while traveling through public transport. The Deputy Mayor sat in the buses and talked to few people in order to know the problems.
The sojourn undertaken by Imran right from Dalgate to Batmaloo would have been taken in right earnest by the people had he been sincere in this respect. Given the fact that he was accompanied by some of the policemen consisting of his security one is forced to say that the journey was somewhat 'motivated' and not a sincere one.
A press release issued by media relations office of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) it has been said that the Deputy Mayor first took a bus from Dalgate to Regal Chowk. Following this Imran boarded a bus from Regal Chowk to Amira Kadal and from Amira Kadal he boarded yet another bus up to Batmaloo.
"The aim of this move was to interact with the passengers and know the issues they face while travelling. During his journey, it came to the fore from passengers that there should be improvisation in quality of public transport fleet for which Deputy Mayor gave assurance to take up matter with the concerned transport department and request them for up-gradation of local buses," reads the press release.
A group of people while sharing their views with Early Times said that the condition of public transport in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir is known to one and all and it is not a rocket science. These people said that instead of this the Deputy Mayor should have taken steps which he and his boss is authorized to do.
"Roadside vendors have created mess on most of the important roads and streets in Srinagar and they need to be removed at the earliest. This job has to be carried out by the SMC and the Deputy Mayor should have taken the first step in this regard. He should have carried out a walk in the important areas of Srinagar and asked the officials of SMC to remove encroachments, but that was not to be," said the city residents.
The group of people said that Mayor and Deputy Mayor should be proactive and take effective measures for removal of bottlenecks in the Srinagar city. They said that instead of interfering in the functioning of other departments the Mayor and Deputy Mayor should limit their mandate to improving the condition of Srinagar city.
