US views Pakistan as main country to destabilize peace in Afghanistan
12/7/2018 9:06:20 PM
The US believes that Pakistan continues to use Afghan Taliban as a hedge against India, and that is the reason for its anger against Pakistan. In fact the US is frustrated over Islamabad's failure to take concrete steps to deny safe havens to terrorist groups. Marine Corps Lt General Kenneth McKenzie's remarks came days after US President Donald Trump sought Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's help in the Afghan peace process. In reality Trump as President of the US is keen to see peace established in Afghanistan so that there is no losses on the US soldiers. The Trump administration, in the recent months, has intensified its efforts to seek a negotiated settlement of America's longest war in Afghanistan where the US has lost over 2,400 soldiers since late 2001, when it invaded the country after the 9/11 terror attacks.
The Taliban are fighting to flush out US-led international forces and re-establish their regime in Afghanistan after their ouster in 2001. "Pakistan is an essential element in long-term stability in Afghanistan," McKenzie told members of the Senate Armed Services Committee the other day during his confirmation hearing for commander of the US Central Command. That is precisely the reason for the American President to impose severe cut in military aid to Pakistan forcing Islamabad to bank on the military aid from China. Despite the fact that Pakistan has allowed China to set up its military bases in Pakistan as a measure to measure muscles with the United States of America and Russia but Trump was really perturbed over the way Pakistan continued to provide safe haven to terrorists.
What seems to enrage Donald Trump is the way Pakistan has been responsible for derailing peace in Afghanistan and in India. Hence the US President has imposed severe cut in military aid to force Pakistan to initiate measures against terrorists. So far there is no response from Pakistan to the military aid cut because the Chinese Government has opened its purse and provided missiles, fighter planes, tanks to Pakistan. In return Pakistan has allowed Beijing to set up its military bases in Pakistan which is close to Russia and from where missiles could hit the US. And for all these years the US policy dithered about imposition of severe cut in military aid because previous US regimes feared that it may prove counter productive as Pakistan may fall in the lap of China accepting any suggestion or demand from Beijing.
