Early Times Report

KISHTWAR, Dec 13: The travel on 210 kms long Jammu-Kishtwar National Highway (NHW) along with 300 Kms long Jammu-Srinagar NHW has become a sort of nightmare for the people commuting on both these highways as the normal journey that took around 5-6 hours is being covered in 16-18 hours due to failed management and worst traffic jams. As per the details available with "Early Times", thousands of vehicles in last 24 hours remain stranded for hours together in traffic jam in and around Udhampur and up to the road leading to Chenani-Nashri tunnel and much to the surprise; hardly any traffic cop or regular cops were seen performing the duty with regard to streamlining of the traffic on the National Highway.
Hundreds of vehicles which got stranded on the NHW due to heavy rainfall not only brought some anxious moments for the travellers but also for several marriage parties, who also got trapped in heavy jam as a result of which the brides and grooms were seen walking on foot to cover the distance so that they could reach on time at theier respective destinations.
The people while talking to "Early Times" said that the 50 kms stretch from Udhampur to Chenani is worst where the up-gradation work is going on at snail's pace adding that the traffic jams have become the hallmark on NHWs as a result of which the traveling on these roads has turned out to be a difficult and uphill task.
The people said that the up-gradation work along with continuous landslides on both the highways have compounded the problems, however, the authorities at the helm of affairs have failed to address the issue pertaining to both frequent traffic jams as well as from continuous landslides.
The passengers who started their journey at 9 am yesterday were able to reach Kishtwar by 3:30 am despite the fact that only one sided traffic was allowed from Jammu towards Srinagar which was later also halted due to fresh snowfall at Jawahar tunnel and due to landslides on several other points.
Meanwhile, Kishtwar police along with R&B Division Kishtwar launched midnight landslide clearance operation at Hasti, some 18 kms from Kishtwar. After hectic efforts, the road was finally cleared at around 3 am.
