SRINAGAR, Dec 22: Traffic resumed on the Kashmir highway on Saturday after remaining suspended since last evening when there were landslides due to which hundreds of Jammu-bound vehicles got stranded, official sources said here.
Traffic remained suspended on the National Highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir and historic 86-km-long Mughal road due to accumulation of snow and slippery road conditions.
Sources said that landslides occurred at Gangroo and Kharpora between Ramban and Ramsu last evening, forcing authorities to suspend traffic.
Hundreds of Jammu-bound vehicles, including those carrying passengers, got stranded at different places on the highway, they said, adding the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, put into service sophisticated machines to remove the landslides.
Traffic has been resumed on the highway and vehicles, stranded on the highway, were being allowed to move towards Jammu this morning.
"For the second day today also, we are allowing traffic from Srinagar to Jammu to clear the stranded vehicles besides allowing fresh traffic later. No vehicle, including security force convoy, will be allowed from opposite direction," they said.
Only one-way traffic was being allowed to ply on the highway, the only all weather road linking Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, for the past about a year to avoid traffic jam and accidents. However, those travelling on the highway alleged that despite one-way, vehicles are plying from both sides, leading to frequent traffic jams. |
