Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 6: The Hospitality and Tourism course in various polytechnic colleges across state run under Technical Board are on verge of closure despite state having huge potential for tourism. .
Wishing anonymity an official of Board concerned told Early Times that to increase employment of state, the government14 years back had introduced the course in government run Polytechnic colleges, later it was introduced in private colleges as well. "Initially a large number of youth opted for the course but after getting the diploma, they have no jobs in the government sector while private players in state are not capable of adjusting professionals in tourism related industry", the official said.
The youths who got diploma in the said sector have no option to pursue higher education in tourism in state. Till date not a single youth has been absorbed in government sector so far. Previous year the board selected 40 candidates out of 60 seats in such trade but astoundingly not a single candidate was given admission thus forcing he colleges to consider dropping the course.
Sources further said that currently the course is run only in government Polytechnics but , it seems they too are considering closure.
Interestingly in each college, government has sanctioned 60 seats in the said trade. At present government polytechnic college Bikaram Chowk Jammu runs three semesters. In all three semesters the college has enrolled 25-30 students. Criticizing state government as well as Department of Tourism Jammu and Kashmir, the official said that since the trade is run in polytechnic, government has failed to show interest about Tourism course.
While introducing the course in Polytechnic Colleges the government had made tall claims that state has lot of tourism potential and to provide better hospitality services, there was need of trained staff. As per government assurance, hundreds of youth opted for course and number of tourists visits Jammu and Kashmir also increased but not a single youth has got any government job. Reason behind declining of enrolment in colleges was that thousands of students have so far completed their diploma course in H&TM in the last nine years the state lack of private industries and not a single diploma holder has been absorbed by government in Tourism department.
He further said that despite the fact that state has tourism department, corporation and 28 tourism development authority but interesting so far government has not advertised a single post for trained youth.
If the government has no plan for absorption of trained youth, then why the government has been wasting money on such courses and spoiling the future of students.
