Two arrested with brown sugar worth over Rs 70 Cr

KUPWARA, Jan 31: Police today apprehended two persons in possession of brown sugar worth over Rs 70 crore in border district of Kupwara in north Kashmir. Police sources said that acting on specific leads, a Tata Sumo vehicle bearing registration no JK01 R 4584 was intercepted at Kupwara adding that on searches19 kilograms of narcotics substance valuing Rs 70-80 crore in international market was recovered from the vehicle.
A police spokesperson said that the two occupants of the vehicle namely Zameer Ahmad Raina son of Mohammad Israel Raina and Riyaz Ahmad Badan son of Abdul Qayoom Badan, both residents of Amrohi, Karnah were arrested.
"Preliminary investigation has revealed that the narcotics substance was smuggled from across the LoC through a narco-smuggling network in the district. The catch will be helpful in protecting the gullible youth, from Pakistan based designs which lure them into drug smuggling and its consumption," said the police spokesman.
"In this regard, a case FIR No. 2/2019 under relevant sections of law has been registered in Police Station Kralpora and further investigation has been set into motion," he said. Meanwhile, Sopore Police produced a charge sheet against four accused persons namely Mohammad Ayoub Malla S/O Ghulam Hassan Malla R/O Malmapampora, Fayaz Ahmad War S/O Ghulam Mohi-ud-din War R/O Warpora, Javid Ahmad War S/O Abdul Rehman War R/O Warpora and Maqsood Ahmad War S/O Mohammad Yousf War R/O Dachanpora Rafiabad in ULA(P) Act before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Sopore. According to police statement, it is apt to mention here that all the four accused persons were arrested on June 26, 2018 during a naka checking at Fruit Mandi Crossing Sopore by Sopore Police, 22-RR & CRPF.
Some incriminating material including grenades and ammunition were recovered from their possession. On this, a case FIR No. 174/2018 under relevant sections of law was registered in Police Station Sopore.
