Early Times Report
KISHTWAR, Mar 20: In order to ensure violence free upcoming Parliamentary elections schedule to be held on 18 April in Kishtwar district, Jammu and Kashmir police have asked people to deposit the licensed weapons or face the legal action.
As per the details available with "Early Times" police made several announcements from the police van on Wednesday asking the license holders to deposit the licensed weapon to nearby police post or at police station Kishtwar before 20-3-2019 or in case of failure, legal action as warranted U/S 188 Cr. Pc will be initiated against the violators whosoever fail to compliance with the order passed by the District Magistrate .
It is pertinent to mention here that District Magistrate Kishtwar vide Order No. 144 DM/K of 2019 Dated 28-2-2019, endorsement No. 1895-1904/DM/K stated that "Keeping in view the prevailing situation and forthcoming elections in the state, it is hereby ordered that all the individuals possessing individual Arms Licenses in District Kishtwar shall deposit their arms and ammunitions at the concerned police station/police post within 15 days from the date of publication/ issuance of this order".
However it was not made clear from the order whether licenses issued to defense personnel will also required to be surrendered.
Kishtwar district came to lime light in terms of issuance of gun licenses after the government reply in J&K legislative Assembly stated that more than 50000 gun licenses were issued in this hilly district before 2015.
Sources believe that majority of the records on the issuance of gun licenses by various District Magistrates of Kishtwar are missing and only few among such licences were registered on online web portal in the recent past.
