Early Times Report

Kulgam, Apr 16: At a time when Prime Minister and leaders of BJP are discussing their achievements by launching several flagship programmes especially the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) , the claims of PM and leaders of BJP gets punctured when it comes to its implementation in Jammu & Kashmir. This sanitation campaign is being murdered by the officials of urban local bodies in various towns of J&K. In Kulgam town of South Kashmir , the local Municipal Committee (MC) is using Vishaw river to dump all the municipal solid waste and animal carcasses. The same water is supplied to almost 100 plus villages for drinking purpose by department of PHE through its water supply schemes.
Details available with Early Times reveal that Municipal Committee (MC) Kulgam from last several years is dumping all he municipal solid waste (MSW) on the banks of Vishaw river located near the town. Authorities from last 5 years have been claiming that a landfill site has been identified in the area but the same is not being put into use by the municipal authorities .
"On daily basis more than 1 metric ton of municipal waste is unloaded on the banks of Vishaw which gets mixed with water especially when the water level in the river increases and the same water is supplied to people by PHE after manual filtration which does not make this water hygienic at all. We took up the issue with Directorate of Urban Local Bodies Kashmir several times, but they are least bothered to address this issue " said Mudassir Ahmad a local resident.
As reported already Municipal Committee Udhampur is also dumping all the garbage collected from Udhampur town in the forest on national highway in the outskirts of Udhampur town. While travelling on Jammu Srinagar highway one can see huge amount garbage collected from various areas of Udhampur town is thrown into a forest area by the sanitation team of town area committee of Udhampur. This place is located only two to three kilometers outside the town. The said forest area is being used as garbage dumping site from last several years by the local municipal authorities. Several water bodies are flowing around this area especially Devika river with the result water flowing in this nallah gets contaminated which is a direct violation of forest , water and environment protection laws....
